Tax serves as compliance expert that seek to protect a companys value from being challenged by different tax authorities from different countries and jurisdiction. Because these challenges can arise from many sources and from different angles including transfer pricing, corporate income tax, deductibility of expense and custom duties, the role requires a real and practical understanding of many areas of business and the ability to communicate with a variety of tax professionals (internal and external) and more importantly, assess and anticipate the risk and potential challenges from different tax authorities in advance. With the establishment of the Regional Tax, this function and role has fundamentally and irrevocably transformed from a traditionally focused, back-office, intensive function to one that is significantly more visible and highly strategic for both the Global and the North Asia and South East Asia and Australia Regions. The incumbent will act as domain expert for the CHANEL in this area to cover China, he/she will also expect to understand CHANEL business environment and business model well, will act as a subject matter expert and provide strategic input on transfer pricing, tax filing and custom issues in the complex regulation framework in China. The incumbent is also the critical partner of the Head of Tax & Treasury for the execution and implementation of various initiatives, and the capabilities to monitor China Tax exposure. The impact you can create at CHANEL (Key Responsibilities): Directly reporting to the Head of Tax & Treasury, the incumbent will be responsible to work closely with the teams that sit both in the Region and in the Market, and will be responsible for the Tax Matters including Global Transfer Pricing Policy Compliance, Local statutory tax and custom compliance and challenges for China, building and consolidating the expertise function and continue to evolve the function to provide following core tax functions to CHANEL:
  • Response to Tax Audits, Investigations and queries from Tax Authorities;
  • Custom queries;
  • Indirect tax Compliance;
  • Corporate Income Tax Filing;
  • Communicate and implement latest Tax regulatory updates;
  • Transfer Pricing Compliance;
  • Respective Tax Operations in close collaboration with the team handling Tax Operations in China.
The incumbent is expected to be an experienced professional
  • Evaluating the tax function from subject matter expect to trusted business partners who proactively participating in business conversation.
  • Provide Strategic advice on the Tax Queries and Tax investigation.
  • Offer consultative guidance on the tax consequences, identifying optimal solutions inline with the companys risk appetites incorporated seamlessly into the entire business operation process.
  • Plan and propose initiatives including projects and initiatives to mitigate tax risk of China and the jurisdiction of Chinas counter party.
  • Exhibits proficiency in acquiring the most recent regulatory updates, conveying such knowledge to stakeholders with insightful sharing and training with perspectives.
  • Being force of proposal regarding the Tax organization locally and having an impact within the Finance community by training the Finance professionals on the Tax fundamentals and main updates.
  • Partner with regional counterparts on Transfer Pricing Monitoring Exercise to ensure the compliance of the Global Transfer Pricing Polices for CHANEL China.
  • Establish strong partner relationship with external Tax Advisors, and ensuring we are provided with the right and strategic support to manage local tax compliance effectively/efficiently for the assigned markets in China.
What you can bring to the team (Role Specifications): Academic / Professional Qualifications
  • Master, Diploma or Degree holder in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration or Law
  • CPA, CTA qualification could be a plus
Work Experience
  • 7+ years relevant work experience
  • Experience of tax as an external tax advisor from a public accounting firm or leading a tax function from a multinational corporation focusing in China
  • Experience as a team leader/manager
  • Solid experience dealing with tax authorities, customs including handing tax / custom audit
Required Competencies
  • Acting as subject matter expert and trusted business partners who proactively participating in business conversation to support business to mitigate tax risks throughout the business end to end process with holistic thinking and strong business sense / business acumen. Able think holistically to identify potential tax risk and identify tax implications of various business decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills who can facilitate discussion of tax issues including its implication, as well as tax risk appetite, and good communication skills who are able to communicate efficiently and confidently with senior management. Able to manage stakeholders across geographies, functions, coordinating people/colleagues to achieve high quality deliverables.
  • Good maturity to analysis issues thoughtfully with deep listening skills and strong observation capabilities, avoid rush to conclusion without considering all the facts.
  • Critical thinking with the ability to challenges various potential solutions from internal / external advisors.
  • Able to leverage numerical acumen / savvy to accurately interpret financial data, able to develop financial models to monitor tax (transfer pricing) exposure.
  • Exhibits proficiency in acquiring the most recent regulatory updates, conveying such knowledge to stakeholders with insightful sharing and training with perspectives.
  • Good problem-solving skills and proactive attitude to takes ownerships and responsibilities of tasks / projects assigned, able to prioritize, follow-through, and drive multiple initiatives, responsibilities, and deadlines, ability to deliver tasks in line with a strategy and a roadmap, and accurately & timely report on completion progress (status and results).

  • Interaction with all corporate and finance functions as well as all different businesses within the organization of China.
  • Close partner with regional and global tax team, and market leadership teams including CFO of China.
